27 October, 1923- Born to Jewish Milton and Beatrice Lichtenstein in Manhattan
1935-June 1940- Attends Franklin School for Boys
August 1940- February 1943- Attends Ohio University studying Fine Arts
February 1943- Education interrupted and Lichtenstein is inducted into Army
March 1946- Returns to Ohio University
1949- Receives his undergraduate and masters for Fine Arts
30 April- 12 May 1951- Reveals his first solo exhibition at the Carlebach Gallery in Manhattan
1957- Works as assistant professor of art at State University of New York
1960- Works as assistant professor of art at Douglass College
1961- Paints "Look Mickey!" and begins experimenting with Pop Art style
1963- Paints famous "Drowning Girl" employing Ben-Day dots, speech bubbles, solid fields and bold colors
5-30 June 1963- Holds first solo exhibition in Europe at Sonnabend's Gallery of Paris
31 January 1964- Life magazine criticizes Lichtenstein asking “Is he the worst artist in America?”
1971- Inducted into American Academy of Arts and Sciences
15 March-2 June 1987- Major retrospective exhibit of Lichtenstein tours the US and Europe
12 June 1992- French Republic declares Lichtenstein Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres
27 September 1997- Roy Lichtenstein dies due to complications from pneumonia
